How to Care for Your Dog in Autumn

📝 Summary

Autumn dog care means easily digested food in smaller rises, fatty acids for dry skin, regular brushing and fewer baths, graduated daily exercise, and prevention of colds, diarrhea, and autumn skin issues from dry air and grass seeds.

1 Diet adjustments

Moving from summer to autumn, fatigue shows clearly, especially in very young and older dogs. Feed easily digested food and increase portions slowly as the dog regains strength. Avoid cold food straight from the fridge, which chills the gut, and avoid overfeeding, which causes weight gain. Daily outdoor exercise helps prevent obesity. Adding fatty acids to the diet eases dry skin and helps store energy for winter.

2 Grooming and coat

Early autumn can leave the coat dull with dandruff; use a suitable brush to support coat renewal and a moisturizing, itch-relieving dog shampoo. Dogs shed summer coat and grow winter coat in autumn, so brush and clean the coat often to encourage it. Once it turns cool, bathe less often (about every 10-15 days) and dry the dog thoroughly afterward to avoid chills.

3 Exercise

Cool air lifts a dog’s spirits and appetite, so daily walks matter. A dog that suddenly gets restless or chews things is often asking for more activity. Build up gradually, starting with 10-15 minutes, because a dog unused to exercise can hurt muscles or organs if the load jumps suddenly.

4 Disease prevention

Immunity shifts with the season, so watch the dog closely. Guard against colds from the wide day-night temperature swing, especially in short-nosed small breeds; keep the dog warm and dry it well after baths. Prevent diarrhea from unclean or poor nutrition, particularly in seniors. And watch for skin problems: dry air, stronger UV, and grass seeds in autumn can trigger itching and allergies, from mites to bacterial or fungal dermatitis, which need a vet’s targeted treatment.
