Why do kittens have tear stains?

Many reasons can cause tear stains in kittens. First, if a cat often eats oily, dry, or overly salty food, it is prone to “heat,” leading to severe tear stains, bad breath, and soft stool. Second, if a kitten is infected with feline rhinotracheitis or other respiratory diseases, it may cause conjunctivitis, with red, swollen eyes and increased discharge, producing tear stains. Finally, blocked nasolacrimal ducts or fur irritating the conjunctiva also cause frequent tearing and severe stains. If the cat has no other symptoms, cleansing eye drops can be used first, with more water and a light diet. If the cat has red eyes, or symptoms such as breathing difficulty, reduced appetite, or lethargy, seek veterinary care promptly to determine the cause.
