How is a dog’s hernia treated?
Expert Answer
There are many types of hernia in dogs, such as abdominal wall hernia, perineal hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, inguinal-scrotal hernia, and umbilical hernia. The most common is umbilical hernia, caused by abdominal organs protruding into the navel, with contents mostly the greater omentum, falciform ligament, and small intestine, and it is more common in very young puppies. A hernia mainly appears as a localized bulge that feels soft, has an obvious fluctuant sensation, but is painless and not hot, and returns to its original state after pressing and releasing. If the hernia does not continue to enlarge, conservative treatment may be considered, but surgery is generally recommended promptly to avoid the contents adhering together and causing a blood supply disorder.
