1 How Much and What If Low
Wild cats eat mice and sparrows rich in moisture and fresh meat, meeting needs easily; house cats on ~10%-moisture kibble that also hate drinking get into trouble. Need: 40-60 ml x kg per day. Low intake concentrates urine and cascades into bladder and urinary tract disease, kidney disease, cystitis, stones, and blockage that can be fatal.
2 Check and Boost Intake
Dehydration shows as slow skin rebound when lifted at the shoulder, or sticky dry gums that regain color slowly when pressed. Boost water with wet food or cans (watch teeth), raw meat if you are skilled, a fountain since cats like moving water (avoid when alone long in case of appliance failure), or a syringe for stubborn drinkers. Do not use tap water – cool boiled or purified, as tap can carry parasites.
