1 Too Much Water Intake
Long-term or excessive fruits and vegetables — high in water — can cause soft stool. Usually stopping them, or a water fast for a day, helps. You can also offer steamed apple (remove the core).
2 Stress
Stress puts great pressure on a hamster and can cause gut problems and soft stool. Stressors include fright, weaning, crowded or dirty housing, transport, diet change, season change and overuse of antibiotics. Avoid these during treatment and give a probiotic powder to support the gut.
3 Chill or Cold-Induced Illness
In odd weather a hamster may not adapt and catches a chill, leading to soft stool. Some hoard food that spoils in the pouch and causes diarrhea when eaten. Keep it warm and treat colds promptly; enteritis starts with soft stool, often with clear or white mucus, eased by a probiotic.
4 Allergies
Allergies may come from bedding or food. If the diet is fixed but soft stool persists, rule out foods one by one to find the allergen. If unsure about a food, do not feed it. Some hamsters are simply prone to soft stool from a weak constitution (e.g., early/late maternal pregnancy).
