Can Heart Disease in Dogs Cause a Cough?

1 Overview
Dog heart disease has many types – congenital, cardiomyopathy, heartworm, etc. Each may differ, but some signs are typical.
I. Cough.
The most common sign is coughing, mostly dry. At first only after excitement or drinking, then even at rest as it worsens. Many causes exist; whichever, take it seriously.
II. Faster breathing.
Faster breathing is easy to miss. Normal rate is ~25/min; over 30 is abnormal. If the dog pants without exercise, suspect heart disease.
III. Unwilling to move.
Most dogs are lively; sudden unwillingness means trouble. Heart disease brings sudden inactivity, low stamina, easy fatigue – panting after a short walk – likely weak myocardium.
IV. Swollen belly.
Belly swelling and ascites are common, from weak myocardium slowing blood flow and building abdominal fluid, also cutting appetite. But tell swelling from obesity to judge right.
