1. Heart disease: not always warned; breeds differ. Some show subtle signs – less activity, more sleep, low appetite, weight loss, faster breathing. Heart disease may cause hard breathing, and using the hind legs can make it cry in pain – watch these. The most common is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; control diet to avoid obesity.

2. Heart failure: means the heart is weaker, no longer meeting needs; the top cause is pulmonary edema, whose root is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Signs: low appetite, less activity, faster breathing; some pant with open mouth, but cats hide it until it is fatal.

3. Myocardial infarction: coronary disease easily causes it. The myocardium gets oxygen from coronary arteries off the aorta; without normal blood, heart disease follows. Cats may have congenital heart disease – get regular checkups.

4. Stroke: older cats risk stroke, as do cats. Stroke is from low or stopped brain blood flow; signs appear fast and can kill suddenly – walking trouble, weakness, paralysis, seizures.
