Why Do Cats Die Suddenly?

1. Trauma: Free-roaming cats go out and may be hit by cars or attacked by dogs or animals, even bitten to death.

2. Poisoning: Outdoor cats may touch or eat toxins and unknown drugs – antifreeze, plant toxins, rat poison – and die from poisoning.

3. Chronic kidney disease: Renal failure is common in cats; when kidneys fail, blood toxins aren’t cleared, causing weight loss, low appetite, vomiting, drowsiness as it progresses. If a cat eats poorly, find the cause – some drink more and urinate more, more common in seniors.

4. Shock: Shock causes low blood pressure and death; causes include allergy, heart injury, sepsis, trauma, blood loss, toxins, dehydration, spinal injury – and kills fast.

5. High blood sugar: Most senior cats show some high blood sugar – more drinking, eating, urine, weight loss. Too high can cause diabetes, needing long-term insulin and diet change. Diabetes harms cats greatly – weakness, drowsiness, vomiting, coma, death.

6. Low blood sugar: Usually from poor diet – two causes: poor nutrition (thin, weak) and not eating (long refusal causes low sugar, then drowsiness, weakness, seizures, sudden death).
