Why do cats develop uremia?

There are many causes of feline uremia, often starting with a urinary tract obstruction. Blockages can be caused by stones, tumors or other foreign objects; when urine cannot drain normally it accumulates in the body, toxins build up, and uremia results.

In addition, some diseases damage kidney function – such as nephritis or diabetes – reducing the kidneys’ ability to excrete waste and triggering uremia. Malnutrition and drug toxicity can also lead to uremia.
