Why are there black crusts around my cat’s nostrils?

Normally a cat’s nostril edges should be clean and moist. Black crusts there may be dried nasal discharge, or a scab from a small wound on the nose.

Wipe the nose gently; if the crust comes off cleanly, keep observing whether it returns. If it does, take the cat to a vet, since upper respiratory infection, calicivirus, or herpesvirus can all increase nasal discharge and need targeted treatment.

If you find a wound while wiping, clean and disinfect it to speed healing.
