Survival: adults suit beginners, best from a known owner; they are tamer, less shy and less likely to die. Pups are harder — fragile, many details, easily killed; avoid pups to avoid bad memories.

Shop hygiene: a dirty shop means unhealthy ‘week’ or ‘month’ hamsters dying soon; visit several clean shops. Beginners should start with one to give full care; two may fight and overwhelm you.

Breed: common are three-lined, pudding, silver fox, milk tea. Pudding is greedy and fats easily but bolder — easier. Silver fox is hard (weak, timid, easily scared). Three-lined is sturdy — good for beginners. Whatever the breed, bond before handling or you may be bitten.
