Do not pull ticks out directly; if many or hard to check in long fur, clip the fur then use a spot-on or spray, and remove dead ticks with tweezers. Watch for lethargy, fever, weakness, malnutrition, thinness and anemia, since ticks spread babesiosis through blood; if these appear, see a vet.
Usually also deworm regularly to avoid fleas, lice and mites.
