What to Do About a Strong-Smelling Hamster
π Summary
Male hamsters have scent glands, so they smell more. If the odor bothers you, deodorize. Here is how.
1 Deodorizing Methods
Buy a proper deodorizing food from a reputable shop and check its expiry; watch for adverse reactions after feeding.
Bedding matters: wood shavings in summer smell strong β switch to sand or add activated charcoal to absorb odor; wash the cage often and change bedding, adding cat litter to absorb urine.
In warm weather keep the cage well-ventilated (and a vented cage) so urine smell leaves; bathe the hamster in bath sand (never water) using unscented sand to keep its own scent. Free-range hamsters smell less but face risks if the area is complex.
2 Note
Good hygiene keeps odor down. For more hamster care, consult an online veterinarian.
