What happens if a dog drinks too much water?

Under normal conditions, a puppy’s daily water intake is about 150 ml per kg of body weight, and an adult dog’s is about 100 ml per kg. In hot summer weather or after exercise, intake increases, which is normal as long as urination remains normal, so the owner need not worry.

If a dog suddenly drinks large amounts of water without any external cause, it may be due to diabetes, kidney disease, or similar issues, and a veterinary check is advised. In addition, drinking too much water can lead to water intoxication, with symptoms such as limb weakness, coma, edema, and reduced urination, which can be fatal in severe cases.
