What Are a Rabbit’s Feet Like, and What Do They Do?

1 Foot Structure

Front legs are short, hind legs long with strong muscle and tendon. A rabbit has 18 toes: 5 front per foot, 4 hind per foot. Like cats, rabbits have claws, but a cat’s retract and a rabbit’s stay out — a key difference in function.

2 Claw Function Differences

Cat claws act only when hunting, climbing or playing; rabbit claws work even walking or sitting — vital on smooth floors or when overweight, where without them a front leg could dislocate or over-extend. Rabbit claws also:

Clean ears: a rabbit’s ear wax (‘ear honey’) is vitamin-rich; it scoops wax with a hind claw and eats it, also self-caring the ear.

Scratch itches — a healthy, happy rabbit scratches; a sick one does not.
