Understanding Hamster Body Language

1 Gently Biting Your Hand

If a hamster lightly bites your hand when you reach into the cage, it is nervous or scared but does not want to hurt you. Some hamsters simply like the taste of your skin or are curious; the bite is usually not hard.

2 Hiding in a Corner

In the wild hamsters live in dark, narrow spaces because, being small, they cannot escape predators and need to hide. A narrow space makes them feel safe. If your hamster suddenly hides in a cage corner or a tight spot, something in the environment is making it uneasy.

3 Suddenly Rolling Over

When you put your hand in, a hamster may quickly flip onto its back. Do not mistake this for cuteness. It usually means the hamster is startled or resisting. With almost no other way to defend itself, showing four paws is its only resistance. If the limbs stay relaxed after rolling over, it simply wants to play.

4 Running Hard on the Wheel

A wheel meets exercise needs; without movement, pent-up energy causes stress. But if a hamster does nothing all day except run, it is likely over-stressed and using the wheel to cope. Move it somewhere quiet so it can calm down.

5 Standing Up with Paws Forward

This means the hamster is scanning its surroundings out of curiosity, or checking whether there is anything edible nearby.
