Heavy eye discharge and inability to open the eyes suggest an eye disease or respiratory virus. Conjunctivitis, keratitis, or ingrown lashes cause tearing, discharge, and swelling. Clean with saline first, then apply neomycin sulfate eye drops, and use a collar to prevent scratching.
If the cat is also lethargic, has a runny nose, or loses appetite, see a vet to check for rhinotracheitis or calicivirus and treat with antivirals.
