1 How Calciuria Harms Rabbits
In adult rabbits, calciuria is harmful. It comes from taking in more calcium than the body can absorb, which burdens the kidneys over time and, in severe cases, can lead to kidney failure. If you notice it in an adult, act promptly:
1. Switch the feed to low-calcium foods. Replace alfalfa with timothy hay to cut calcium intake.
2. Let the rabbit get more sunlight. Sunlight helps the body absorb and process calcium, and boosts metabolism and immunity. Aim for about 1 hour of light per day.
3. Add water. Besides changing the diet, more water helps the kidneys flush out the excess calcium.
2 Signs of Calciuria
Normal rabbit urine is clear, sometimes faintly yellow. If it turns milky white and leaves a clear mark after drying, your rabbit most likely has calciuria. The signs are obvious; use the steps above to correct the problem early.
