How to Raise Juvenile Turtles: Diet and Daily Care Tips

1 Stocking Density

Before their third winter, juveniles weigh roughly 6–100 g. They are gentle and won’t fight, but they do compete for food, so don’t crowd them just because they are small. For 2- and 3-year-olds, keep them separate: about 50–80 turtles per square meter at age 2, and 20–30 per square meter at age 3. If you are inexperienced, start with lower density. You can also add 5–10 fingerling silver carp or crucian carp to the pond to help balance the water.

2 Feeding and Daily Management

Diet

Feed a formulated diet with protein around 28–32%. Give 3–5% of total body weight per meal, twice a day — about 8–9 a.m. and 4–5 p.m. You can also mix in chopped melon rind or greens.

Water temperature

Keep the water at 28–30°C. Below 15°C the turtles go into hibernation and stop eating. Hold the temperature steady — a sudden drop from 30°C to 28°C can disrupt feeding and stall growth. Light matters too: turtles bask to make vitamin D3 and absorb calcium for shell growth, so provide a basking platform, or use artificial light if there is no natural sun.

Water quality

Aim for pH 7.5–8.0, 30–40 cm clarity, and a light green tint. In breeding ponds, apply slaked lime once and aerate intermittently for over 8 hours daily, longer at night. Change water regularly by draining a third of the old water and refilling — the new water must be within 5°C of the old to avoid shocking the turtles. Floating plants or photosynthetic bacteria like water lettuce, water hyacinth, or duckweed (under a quarter of the surface) cut nitrogen and phosphorus and clean the water, but thin them if they overrun.

In hot summers, set up shade so direct sun doesn’t overheat the pond.
