How to Layer Hamster Bedding

1 Choosing and Laying Bedding
1. Spread bedding evenly and change it on a schedule. For wood shavings, lay a uniform layer about 2-3 cm deep across the cage floor. With wood pellets, add another centimeter of depth. If your hamster dislikes pellets, lay a thin layer of shavings on top to ease the transition and clean the cage once a week. Pellets produce little dust, won’t irritate the respiratory tract, last a long time, and are best used in summer.
2. Bedding comes in many forms, wood shavings, cat litter, corncob, and more. Shavings are the most popular and affordable, but their absorbency and odor control are only average, so in hot months you may need to replace them often to keep the habitat clean and dry. Some owners use cat litter because it absorbs well and controls odor. If you use corncob bedding, sun-dry and sterilize it first to prevent bacteria that could harm the hamster’s skin.

3. You can make your own bedding: buy small wood sticks and shave them into chips with a pencil sharpener, or mix pet bentonite litter with tofu litter for a homemade blend. Dried, crushed corncob also works as bedding.
4. If you use urine sand, lay it first and top it with a layer of shavings; don’t mix the sandy urine sand directly with shavings. Place the urine sand in a small box so the hamster uses it as a toilet, changing the sand every two days and the shavings every 3-7 days, and keep bath sand available for cleaning.
Never just pile bedding randomly in the cage, lay it in an orderly way so you can clearly see which parts are soiled and clean them promptly.
