What to Feed a Newly Weaned Puppy

1. Choosing the staple

Wean gradually to solid food with puppy or ‘milk-cake’ kibble. Early on, soften kibble with goat milk or warm water, then shorten soaking over time to dry food. Don’t feed adult dog food — its lower protein, fat and calcium harm development.

2. Water

A puppy is about 80% water, so it needs enough to function; too little causes ‘heat’, constipation or heatstroke. Provide fresh, clean water daily, always available.

3. Feeding frequency

The gut is immature, the stomach small and digestion weak, so feed little and often. Newly weaned puppies: 4–5 times a day, small amounts, to avoid indigestion, vomiting or diarrhea.

4. Other supplements

They may need extra nutrition — add fish oil, vitamin tablets or supplements to the kibble for needed nutrients.

Precautions for Feeding a Newly Weaned Puppy

1. Keep warm

The body is immature and immunity low; without warmth they catch colds easily. In cold weather use heating pads, hot-water bottles, heat lamps or warmers, and avoid taking the puppy out.

2. Environment hygiene

Keep things clean: regularly clean the bed, bowls and dishes to avoid bacteria, fungi and viruses that cause gut and skin problems.

3. Deworm promptly

From 45 days, deworm regularly; without it, parasites cause malnutrition, anemia, weight loss and low immunity. Normally from 45 days to 1 year, deworm internally and externally monthly; don’t bathe 3 days before and after spot-on treatment.

4. Regular health checks

Watch the puppy’s behavior and health daily — appetite, spirit, breathing, temperature. Provide a safe, comfortable environment to avoid harm and disease.
