1 Goldfish Diet by Developmental Stage

  • Larva stage—from hatching until the yolk sac is absorbed (about 3 days). The newborn cannot swim horizontally and clings to the spawn or tank wall, living only on yolk-sac nutrients. Around day 3 the fins and gut are developed enough to swim and start taking food, entering the juvenile stage.
  • Juvenile stage—from first external feeding to before sexual maturity (about a year). The body grows from roughly 1 cm to 6–8 cm, and some well-developed fish pass 10 cm. The first food taken is the ‘first feed’; its suitability decides survival and healthy growth. Good first feeds are rotifers and paramecium; if unavailable, use a cyprinid first-feed or finely mashed hard-boiled egg yolk.
  • Adult stage—fish eat a wide, mixed diet: larger zooplankton, plant debris, formulated feeds, bran, barley and soybean cake, and occasionally the moss on tank walls. Knowing this omnivorous habit is key to good care.
  • Feeding precautions

  • Adjust protein and nutrients to each stage. Generally, a one-year fish’s feed should be at least one-third protein; a two-year fish needs about 13.5%. Mature breeders need slightly less—follow the same approach as for carp, whose diet is similar.
  • Color is a key quality marker. Experienced keepers favor ‘old water’ (mature tank water) rich in natural live food that helps pigment build-up; supplement carotene to boost red pigment. Never let fish go hungry—starvation dulls color—and avoid incomplete nutrition (such as a lack of vitamin A), which causes thinness and fading.
  • Keep water warm: low temperature stops feeding and the fish live on stored fat, becoming thin. Maintain 20–28°C and avoid large temperature swings.
