Do Turtles Need Frequent Water Changes?

1 How Often to Change Water

A normal aquatic turtle is usually changed about every 3 days; because turtles are sensitive to water changes, do not do it too often or they get sick. In summer they eat more, so waste builds up faster and you should change water as soon as it looks cloudy or smells; in winter, when they are inactive, about once a week is enough. With a filter plus plenty of plants and nitrifying bacteria, change every 7 to 15 days. A larger enclosure keeps water more stable, so change less often; a smaller one needs more frequent changes, but do not over-size the tank just to cut changes, since too much space makes turtles insecure. Higher density and more feeding mean more waste and more frequent changes, sometimes daily if water deteriorates fast.

Important: whatever the interval, change only one-third of the water each time, because a large change stresses the turtle and causes illness.

2 Water-Change Precautions

Dechlorinate first: never use tap water directly, since disinfection leaves chlorine that harms aquatic life. Age the water (let it sit in the sun 2 to 3 days) so chlorine escapes before use; in bad weather age it longer to be sure. Mind the temperature: turtles are sensitive to swings, so keep new and old water close, within 1 C for small tanks and ideally 2 C for large ones. Clean debris: when changing, remove food scraps and feces from the bottom; a siphon works well for small tanks and helps maintain water quality and curb bacteria.
