Why Does a Hamster Dig Frantically in Its Bath Sand?

1. The hamster may simply have excess energy and no wheel to burn it on, so it digs to release energy. Hamsters need daily exercise – an inherited instinct – and without it they get restless and bite the cage or dig. Give the hamster a wheel to play and exercise on; once its need is met, the digging stops.

2. Bath sand is for washing; if the hamster wants a bath, it rolls in the sand. Some hamsters enjoy it so much they keep playing there, and digging may just be normal play. If yours likes the sand, change it often, since soiled sand breeds bacteria. You can sun the used sand for a few days and reuse it, raising its usefulness.

3. A female hamster digging frantically may be pregnant – pregnancy changes her temperament and makes odd behavior likely. If a female suddenly starts digging and drinking heavily after cohabiting, she is likely pregnant; isolate her in a quiet, dim place with ample food and water, and soon she will deliver a litter.

4. Whether it is frantic digging or another odd behavior, it means something may be wrong, so find out promptly to spare the hamster more distress. Once the body returns to normal, the odd behavior disappears.
