Stray cats usually come to blows over resources such as territory and food. Cats with clashing temperaments can also quarrel. This article looks at the main reasons stray cats fight.

In short, these are the usual triggers. Because strays live in harsh conditions, they must stay constantly on guard just to survive.

Stray cat fights are usually contests of strength rather than fights to the death. Cats attack with claws and teeth and mostly only scratch or bite, rarely killing. But a cat with heart disease or another hidden condition can fall ill mid-fight, and a wound can become infected and turn fatal.

Life is hard for strays: poor living conditions, frequent illness, unmet basic needs, and endless competition. The weakest struggle to survive. Worse still, some strays fall into the hands of cruel people who capture or abuse them.

We urge everyone to help cats where they can, and at the very least not to harm them. If you are able, offer food, arrange neutering, or adopt. Neutering prevents more strays from being born and reduces both their suffering and their fighting.
