Why Does a Cat Attack Its Owner?

Most cat attacks are defensive, not malicious. Fear (a new environment, a sudden grab by a guest) makes a cat arch, hiss, and flee—or bite if cornered. Pain and illness also trigger protective striking. Redirected aggression is common: a cat riled by something outside attacks the nearest person or pet. Territorial and play aggression, plus learned roughness from hand-play, round out the list. Read the body language, never corner a scared cat, and don't use your hands as toys.
