1 Appearance
A small hamster about 19 cm long and light in weight, the White Bear has thick, smooth, snow-white fur and eyes that are usually red or black like amber. It is often confused with the Silver Fox hamster, but the White Bear has larger ears and a shorter nose. Its pink nose, slightly open mouth, and long white whiskers give it a cute look.
2 Behavior and Environment
Temperament. Many line-group hamsters are short-tempered and may bite at first, but they warm up and bond after learning the owner’s scent through patient, regular hand-feeding. Some are gentle, becoming irritable only when in heat or pregnant.
Nocturnal. They sleep by day and forage at night, so provide plenty of food in the evening.
Timid. They dislike very dry air and like to hide for security. Keep the cage away from loud TVs, speakers, and computers to avoid startling them.
Temperature. Around 27 C is ideal. In winter add a cotton blanket or warm bedding (keeping it breathable); in heat, a fan helps. Avoid air-conditioned rooms and never let them move between very different temperatures, which can cause illness.
3 Diet and Weight
Because they tend to be chubby, balance the diet and avoid too much fat or calories. Obesity lowers activity, harms appetite, digestion, and sleep, and raises the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Keep food varied and weight in the normal range.
