๐Ÿ“ Summary

A rabbit that stops eating and goes listless may be dehydrated, constipated, or fighting an infection such as coccidia or bacteria. This article explains the causes and the constipation-relief methods (salts, oils, enema, meds).

1 Causes of a Rabbit Not Eating and Looking Lethargic

Causes of a Rabbit Not Eating and Looking Lethargic

1. Dehydration

If the water you give is not clean, or you don’t supply clean water in time, the rabbit can become dehydrated. Lack of water hurts digestion and makes the rabbit listless; over time it loses interest in food and shows low energy and reduced activity. Always keep clean water available to prevent dehydration and anorexia.

2. Constipation

A constipated rabbit shows reduced or lost appetite and weaker gut sounds. Early signs: few, dry, hard droppings, then stopped defecation. Some sick rabbits bend their necks to look at their belly and anus, showing straining, gut blockage, and excess gasโ€”’bloating.’ Severe constipation leaves a white gel-like coating on the pellets and very little, brownish-red urine. The abdomen feels full of hard feces; if it lasts too long, the rabbit becomes weak and lethargic.

The following methods can treat it:

Methods to treat constipation:

1) Warm saline or sodium sulfate in water: adult rabbits 5 g, half for juveniles, 1โ€“2 times daily for 2โ€“3 days, stop when constipation clears.

2) Liquid paraffin or castor oil mixed with equal water: adult rabbits 16 ml, half for juveniles, 1โ€“2 times daily for 2โ€“3 days.

3) 40 ml warm soapy water (about 46ยฐC) enema: connect a catheter to a needle-less syringe, insert into the rectum, and slowly infuse.

4) 26 ml peanut or rapeseed oil plus 10 ml honey and some water, given by mouth once daily for 2โ€“3 days.

5) Bisacodyl by mouth: adult rabbits 6 mg per dose, half for juveniles, 3 times daily, stop immediately when constipation clears.

6) For stubborn cases, intramuscular sulfamonomethoxine: adult rabbits 0.3 mg, half for juveniles. Within about 20 minutes the rabbit usually passes many hard pellets; 1โ€“2 injections usually cure. Observe 10โ€“20 minutes after injection; if it shows difficulty breathing, muscle tremors, drooling, or sweating, inject an antidote promptly to rescue.

3. Disease Infection

When a rabbit is infectedโ€”e.g., coccidia or bacteriaโ€”it also stops eating and looks lethargic. For disease-caused symptoms, find the cause first, then treat accordingly; don’t panic-medicate and cause irreversible harm. Let a professional veterinary doctor handle treatment.

The above are some reasons a rabbit won’t eat and looks lethargic; they are only partial and for reference.
