Why do dogs get cataracts?

Senior dogs are more prone to cataracts because, as they age, the lens fibers gradually degenerate, causing the lens to cloud. In addition, some dogs may get cataracts due to genetic influence, with the lens developing abnormally in the womb so they are born with them. Also, cataracts can result from a blow to the eye that ruptures the lens capsule. Furthermore, some other diseases in dogs can lead to secondary cataracts, such as uveitis, retinal degeneration, and diabetes.
