Why do cats lick their rear?

Cats lick their rear as part of self-cleaning. As very clean animals, they groom themselves, and when they feel secretions or dirt around the anus they lick to keep it clean. They may also lick the area when it is painful or uncomfortable.

For example, inflamed or blocked anal glands cause discomfort and lead to frequent licking. If this happens, take the cat to a veterinary clinic promptly.
