Explains why the musk turtle is the most budget-friendly deep-water species and shares practical care tips on tank size, temperature, water treatment, basking, and diet for keeping one successfully.

1 Why the Musk Turtle Is the Cheapest

The musk turtle is the most economical deep-water turtle because its strong reproductive rate keeps numbers high and prices low among deep-water species, and it is very easy to keep alive. Although it is a deep-water turtle, it still needs to bask, so set up a basking platform in the tank and give it roughly two to three hours of sun each day. This supports digestion and helps the body absorb calcium, which benefits its health.

2 Caring for a Musk Turtle

A musk turtle stays small, usually under 13 centimeters as an adult, so a small glass tank is enough for one, though a larger setup is needed for groups. Provide hides such as rocks, driftwood, or planted vegetation because the species is shy. Keep the temperature between 23 and 28 degrees Celsius; below 10 degrees it enters hibernation, so warm the water gradually without removing the turtle. It tolerates modest water quality, but treat tap water by letting it stand for three days to release chlorine, and run a filter with regular changes. Feed a quality sinking turtle pellet (not floating, since it forages at the bottom) with some live food, and avoid overfeeding.
