Causes: A sudden temperature drop without extra bedding (a small blanket, more wood shavings) lets the hamster catch a chill. A damp, dirty, or cold habitat also causes colds, especially in naturally weak hamsters. Lastly, a human with a cold can pass it on.
Symptoms: Early — sneezing, runny nose, red eyes. Mid — lethargy, heavy sleeping, weak limbs and no wheel running, sometimes tears. Late — weight loss from poor appetite, even refusal to eat, with breathing difficulty and shivering.
Also, a cold hamster curls in a cage corner and moves slowly when you try to play, trying to conserve heat.
How to Treat a Hamster Cold
If you keep more than one, isolate the sick hamster at once — colds are contagious. Disinfect its cage and the bowls it touched.
A mild cold with normal appetite and energy often clears up with warmth alone. If the hamster is sleepy and listless, steep a few isatis-root granules in hot water, let it cool, and offer it to drink. For mid-to-late or severe cases, give nutrient water or antibiotics so its body does not decline while refusing food — but it is best to take it to a vet, since most antibiotics are unsafe for hamsters.
