Why Siamese Cat Fur Turns Dark

A Siamese kitten is born with white fur because it has just left the warm womb of its mother, so at birth it appears snow-white. As it grows, the soft white coat gradually sheds and is replaced by new fur, and the face and extremities usually grow darker over time.

However, the darkening is not related to age. It is mainly driven by the activity of tyrosinase in the body. Siamese cats have a form of tyrosinase that is highly sensitive to outside temperature: when the environment is cooler, the enzyme becomes more active, speeding up melanin production and turning parts of the coat dark. The darkening mostly appears where fur is thin and exposed, the face, ears, and limbs.

Owners sometimes notice that after shaving a Siamese cat, some fur starts to darken. Shaving is not the root cause; it only speeds up the process. This is a normal physical reaction, so owners need not worry, the darkened fur can return to normal as temperatures rise.

The Pattern of Coat Color Change

A Siamese cat’s coat can turn both dark and light. The melanin gene responds to temperature: when the skin is cooler, the fur darkens; when the skin is warmer, the fur returns to a creamy white.

In summer the coat lightens mainly because higher temperatures suppress the melanin gene and reduce pigment production, so the fur fades back. In short, a Siamese cat’s coat color changes with temperature.

Also, the darkening shows up mainly on the legs, tail, and face. This is because those areas are more affected by temperature; the body is less responsive, so in winter the face often turns dark while the body only darkens slightly.

In addition, young Siamese cats usually have lighter coats, mostly white, but the color deepens with age. This is normal and owners need not be concerned.
