Somali
The Somali cat looks much like the Abyssinian—slender, slightly rounded, with big V-shaped ears and almond eyes—but with a semi-long, soft, dense coat. Developed in the US and Canada from a spontaneous long-haired mutation of the Abyssinian, the Somali is intelligent, gentle, playful, and water-loving, though its abundant coat needs regular grooming.
Canadian Hairless
The Canadian Hairless, also called the Sphynx, is an extremely rare hairless genetic variant that appeared during the breeding of American or European domestic cats. Although it shares the skin pigment of domestic cats, its skin bears only a few hairs. With a wedge-shaped body, large ears, and a bulky frame, its head looks like Yoda's. The whole look makes it seem not cute but rather frightening compared with domestic cats.
Korat
The Korat cat, also called the Korat or Si-Sawat, originates from the Khorat Plateau in northwest Thailand and is an ancient breed. Introduced to the US in 1959 and recognized by American cat lovers in 1965, and by Britain 10 years later. Its coat, like the Russian Blue and Chartreux, is solid blue with no shading or pattern, with a silvery sheen, and it has a unique heart-shaped face.
European Burmese
The European Burmese is an elegant cat, but not a fragile one. It has a well-proportioned build, moderate muscle, and expressive eyes. Because it is very intelligent, affectionate, and loyal, it makes an excellent pet.
Tonkinese
The Tonkinese, also known as the Vietnamese cat, is not from Vietnam but a purebred short-haired breed produced by crossing the Siamese with the Burmese, first appearing in North America in the 1930s. With pointed coloring softer than the Siamese and a short, silky coat like the Burmese, the Tonkinese is famously affectionate, active, and people-oriented.
Birman
The Birman, also called the sacred cat of Burma, is a medium-sized cat with the Latin name Birman. Although now distributed worldwide, legend says they once lived only in Myanmar and were kept by temple monks; because they guarded the hall, they are considered temple guardian cats.
Scottish Fold
The Scottish Fold's ears fold neatly forward over the head, earning it a place among the 'elf' cats. It is said that in 1961, a farm cat in Scotland gave birth to a litter containing a strange kitten with white fur, folded ears, and an owl-like face. Named after its birthplace near Coupar Angus, Scotland, and its folded ears, the breed became known as the 'Scottish Fold'.
Abyssinian
The Abyssinian, also called the rabbit cat, Ethiopian cat, or Abyssinian, has the English name Abyssinian and is now distributed around the world. People usually judge a cat's origin by its name, but the Abyssinian's origin seems somewhat distant from Abyssinia. Abyssinia is the old name for Ethiopia, yet many believe the Abyssinian comes from ancient Egypt.
Egyptian Mau
The Egyptian Mau (Felinae) is found worldwide. Although called the Egyptian Mau, it cannot be confirmed that it originated in Egypt; however, because its image and written records appear in ancient Egyptian murals, steles, and papyrus scrolls, people believe its ancestor is the African wildcat. In the 1950s, the Egyptian Mau was introduced to the United States and Britain, and in 1968 it won awards in formal competitions.
