Features of Rabbit Breeding
1. Strong fertility. Rabbits mature early, have a short gestation, large litters and can breed year-round β a reproductive edge no other livestock matches. A medium rabbit can be mated at 5β6 months, gestates one month and raises two generations a year. Under intensive production each doe yields 8β9 litters a year, 6β7 kits surviving per litter, raising 50β60 kits annually. For breeding stock, 4β5 litters and 25β30 offspring a year is typical.
2. Large eggs. Among known mammals the rabbit has the largest, fastest-developing ovum, which is why it is widely used in biology, genetics and animal-reproduction research.
3. Induced ovulation. A doe’s ovaries always hold follicles at different stages, ready to release. But ovulation is not spontaneous; it needs a stimulus such as a buck’s mating or a drug, which releases the mature follicles. Rabbits ovulate about 10β12 hours after mating; if no mating occurs during estrus, they do not ovulate and the mature follicles age and are absorbed.
4. Two uteri. The female has two separate uteri, both opening at the vagina, so a doe may show ‘double pregnancy’ β one batch of fetuses, then a second batch days or hours later, because she conceived twice and the fetuses developed in different uteri.
5. Irregular estrous cycle. This ties to induced ovulation. Without stimulus, mature eggs are not released and no corpus luteum forms, so new follicles are not suppressed β hence the irregular cycle. Estrogen levels rise and fall with alternating follicle waves, so estrus signs range from obvious to subtle. Even outside estrus, if follicles are developing, forced mating can still conceive.
6. Scent-gland induction of estrus. Rabbits have four pairs of scent glands whose secretions carry a special odor linked to breeding. The male’s odor can lure and promote estrus in the female, making her accept mating.
7. Peak sexual activity at dawn and dusk. Rabbits are most active about 1 hour after sunrise, 2 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset, when mating success is highest. Timing matings to this rhythm matters.
8. High pseudopregnancy rate. If a doe is stimulated to ovulate but not fertilized, she still forms a corpus luteum and secretes progesterone, which develops the mammary glands and enlarges the uterus, producing pregnancy signs with no fetus. Around day 16 a pseudopregnant doe may build a nest, pull fur and express a little milk, but no kits are born. Main causes are stimulation by a sterile buck, group housing and late weaning; in practice pseudopregnancy is prevented by re-mating (double mating).
9. Summer infertility. This mainly affects bucks. In hot summer, sustained high temperature and long daylight lower appetite and libido, shrink the testes and degrade semen quality, cutting conception. Keep daylight under 12 hours and temperature under 30Β°C. Females are less affected β subtle estrus, lower appetite and lower conception after mating.
