Preparing for Hamster Breeding
π Summary
Hamsters mature at 2-3 months, gestate 15-22 days, and usually have 5-8 pups. Successful home breeding needs healthy stock, a quiet warm humid nest box, and good pre-pairing nutrition. Separate the male right after pairing, keep the mother calm and fed, avoid disturbing newborns, keep them warm, rebuild the mother's strength, and split the young at one month.
1 Before Breeding
Check the hamsters’ health to be sure they are fit.
Prepare a comfortable breeding box with clean bedding in a quiet, dim, well-ventilated place, and remove any wheel or tall equipment.
Provide ample nutrition for good breeding condition, and a week before pairing add a nutritional paste for the female.
2 During Pregnancy
Separate the male right after pairing succeeds; the female stops cycling but the male does not, and co-housing risks conflict.
Keep the environment quiet to avoid stress and miscarriage.
Meet the higher nutritional need with plenty of food and water for fetal development.
Near the due date, place the cage in a calm space with dimmed light to increase her sense of security.
3 After Birth
Pups nurse for the first 5 days; offer hamster mix only from about day 15.
Do not disturb the mother and pups, and never touch hairless newborns, but observe. Some mothers eat pups under stress, so avoid loud noise and strangers.
Keep newborns warm, and restore the mother’s strength with high-energy, nutritious food.
Separate the young into their own cages at one month of age.
