1 Chinchilla Soft Stool: Causes and Care

1. What normal droppings look like

Firm rice-grain pellets that dry within an hour with visible pores. Mild soft stool is slightly soft with a sticky coat but still formed; severe is mushy, unformed, and the chinchilla licks its anus and soils the fur.

2. Causes

Mostly diet: poor hay, oily feed, too many snacks or fruit, or a food change. Fright or a changed environment also triggers it. In hot humid summer feed spoils; check before feeding. Feed scientifically.

3. Treatment

Mild, formed stool: find the cause; a newly homed chinchilla can be watched without drugs. If diet is normal and not worsening, keep ‘more hay, less pellets’ and do not fast it blindly. Switch to grass-powder pellets and add dried garlic skin or scallion leaves. But stop all snacks, oily food, and high-water food.

Severe, unformed stool: see a vet or take a fresh sample for testing. For enteritis with bad diarrhea, use anti-diarrhea and sulfa drugs and rehydrate if needed; for parasites, deworm; for gut flora upset, use the mild diet plus probiotics. For watery stool, also give anti-diarrhea powder like smectite.

4. Prevention

Safe feed stored cool and dry; discard damp or spoiled. Give bottled or boiled-cooled water, not tap. Clean and disinfect bowls and gear. Snacks about 1 g each, not too often. Keep the environment clean, dry, comfortable.
