Hydration Tips for Walking Your Dog
π Summary
On walks, offer small amounts of water often. After exercise, let the dog cool down before drinking β gulping water risks bloat and is especially dangerous for flat-faced breeds.
1 Overview
During exercise
Whether jogging or strolling, owners should carry a dog water bottle; it’s important. Stop now and then to let it drink, but don’t let it gulp too much at once, which can upset its stomach.
A habit of timed drinking during exercise slows the rise in body temperature, builds water reserves, eases dehydration, and prevents mid-exercise dehydration.
After exercise
This is today’s key point β experienced owners don’t give water right after exercise. Why?
First, after exercise the dog’s temperature and heart rate should return to normal and tight muscles fully relax. So as exercise ends, gradually slow the pace rather than stopping abruptly.
What else can you do?
Right after getting home, let it rest well. If it’s a heat-sensitive breed or pants harder than usual, wipe its paws, armpits, and groin with a warm-water-soaked towel to cool it down.
Don’t feed or water immediately
Human and canine thinking align here: after exercise we must replenish lost energy and water.
But can we really? After exercise, don’t give food or water right away.
At this time the dog’s appetite is huge; overeating raises stomach-disease risk and extra food becomes fat. Simply, the dog’s brain is over-hungry, so right after exercise it’s extremely hungry β to avoid obesity, bloat, and other illness, don’t feed it immediately.
The same goes for water, and compared with kibble, water more easily causes bloating; for flat-faced dogs, gulping lots of water at once is very dangerous β don’t let it drink right after exercise.
