1. How long do they live?
With normal care, 30–80 years; counting hibernation cycles, 40–100 years. Wild turtles are hardier and live longer in cleaner environments. Keep water stable, especially while young and fragile, to avoid illness and death.
2. How big do they get?
Among the larger turtles, adults reach about 3 jin (~1.5 kg). Females are larger, averaging 1.5–3 jin; males average 1.4–2 jin. Size depends on feeding — give enough food and nutrition. Diet: earthworms, fish, shrimp, organ meat, clam, or synthetic feed (easier and gentler on water quality); occasionally fruit, veg, and grain (rice, corn, apple, strawberry, carrot, cabbage) for vitamins and fiber and brighter color.
3. When can they breed?
They develop slowly. Males are adult at 3–4 but ready to breed at 4–5; females mature later, at 5–6, breeding at 6–7. Don’t breed them right at maturity — organs aren’t ready and early breeding harms development and lowers quality and number.
