How intelligent is a Bichon Frise?

The Bichon Frise is quite intelligent. Among common pet dogs, the Bichon ranks 45th in working intelligence, which is roughly equivalent to the cognitive level of a 3- to 4-year-old child. Bichons are cheerful and outgoing, very loyal to their owners, and highly obedient, so they cooperate well during training.

They also have a strong memory, which lets them pick up simple commands quickly. Owners can begin training when the Bichon is about 2–3 months old, and it helps to reward the puppy with a small treat during sessions.
