How Cats Keep Themselves Clean

1 The Tongue
The tongue is a cat’s main cleaning tool. Covered in even little backward spines, it combs the coat, lifts shed fur, scrapes off debris, and clears odd smells while grooming.
2 Saliva
Saliva also cleans and disinfects. When a cat picks up another animal’s scent or harmless germs, licking helps sanitize the spot, and in summer the evaporated saliva carries away excess body heat.
3 Teeth
Sharp teeth do more than defend. While grooming, a cat can bite larger parasites dead, and when skin itches, the teeth scratch the itch and pull trapped fur free.
4 Paws
Paws are weapons, but also groomers. When a burr or wild plant clings where tongue and teeth cannot reach, the cat uses its paws to smooth the coat and relieve the itch.
