Skip wood shavings, which trap heat; use corn cob or cat litter instead, and add smooth pebbles the hamster can lie on to cool off. A shallow water basin beside the cage cools the air through evaporation; in a real heat wave, move the hamster to an air-conditioned room until it recovers. Finally, hamsters hate both sustained heat and large temperature swings—keep the daily difference under 10°C to avoid illness.
