1. Why Install Aeration
Fish rely on dissolved oxygen in the water, a key water-quality indicator. They generally need over 5 mg/L; below 1 mg/L they start surface-gasping (‘piping’), and prolonged gasping causes tissue hypoxia and death. Install an aeration system to keep oxygen sufficient, and if levels drop, add fresh water or run the pump.
2. Types of Aeration Systems
By how they move air, pumps are mainly electromagnetic-vibration or electric:
1. Electromagnetic-vibration air pump. Low pressure with a loud motor hum; place soft padding underneath to cut noise. Suited to small home tanks. Often includes a battery or auto-charge backup for power outages.
2. Electric air pump. Higher pressure and larger; suited to public displays, large tanks, or multi-tank setups. Subtypes include vortex, Roots blower, and stacked blower-suction pumps.
3. Choosing and Using an Air Pump
1. Size the pump power to your tank size, fish count, and oxygen demand; adjust the airflow. In winter, too much airflow cools tropical tanks and stresses or kills fish.
2. Keep the pump above the waterline; don’t kink the airline; guard against leaks and water siphoning back into the pump.
3. Over time air stones may stop flowing as pores clog with debris or algae. Water backing into the tubing also reduces output. Regularly check the tubing for water and blockages and clear them. Failures can also come from a cracked diaphragm; inspect the pump often and clean the stones.
