What to Do When a Rabbit Is Lethargic and Won’t Eat
๐ Summary
A rabbit that stops eating and loses its spark is often overfed, frightened, bacterial, or battling internal parasites such as coccidiosis. Male rabbits may simply be blocked by a full bladder, while coccidiosis needs prompt antiparasitic treatment โ and any unclear case belongs at the vet.
1 Common Causes
Overeating or fright. For a full belly, massage the abdomen and encourage movement to aid digestion, with a pet probiotic if needed. For a frightened, stressed rabbit, remove the scare, soothe it, and offer a favorite treat to restart appetite.
Bacterial gut infection. A simple anti-inflammatory plus more roughage helps.
Internal parasites. Coccidiosis, for example, causes exactly this; deworm promptly.
For a male rabbit, feel the bladder โ a full one from cystitis can cause the same signs, and he needs clinic catheterization.
2 Coccidiosis Specifically
The incubation period is about three days. Sick rabbits show lost or absent appetite, thinning, dullness, huddling, rough coat, pale conjunctiva, fever, and sometimes yellow mucous membranes.
If coccidiosis is confirmed, inject a long-acting anticoccidial or mix an oral coccidiosis treatment into the food or water.
These are only the common causes. If you cannot pin down the reason, a vet visit is the safe call. Wishing your rabbit a quick recovery.
