I. Causes of canine hypothyroidism

Exact causes are often unclear. Usually it is immune-mediated – the immune system attacks the thyroid, causing shrinkage. Some dogs are genetically prone; check parents or littermates.

Any age can be affected, but most are 4-10 years; sex does not change risk.

II. Symptoms

Hypothyroidism causes whole-body signs that vary by dog. Sadly some also fit other diseases, so see a vet for any sign. Most common: obesity/weight gain, low initiative, symmetric hair loss on both sides, dry brittle sparse coat, skin issues (infection, scaling), ear infection, drowsiness, weakness, unsteady gait, arrhythmia, ataxia.

Less common but serious complications: vestibular disorder (dizziness), nerve disorder, heart problems, obesity-related issues.

A dog may show one or more of these, but even symptom-free dogs can have it. So yearly vet visits (1-2 times) and regular bloodwork are wise.

III. Treatment

Treatment is conservative hormone supplements; it does not cure but controls hormone levels to keep the dog normal.

Follow the vet’s dose, usually 1-2 times daily. Few side effects, but control the amount – overdose causes more urination, thirst, restlessness, fast breathing, diarrhea, and bigger appetite.

After a month, recheck and adjust the dose. Few other treatments exist, so the dog may take it for life; supplements are not costly but add up.
