Skin penetration: in a larva environment, a cat passing by lets larvae enter through the skin, then migrate to the gut and grow.
Ingestion: via grooming, drinking, or eating contaminated food, etc.
In utero: an infected mother dog can pass larvae to kittens via the womb. For cats, unknown.
Milk: common in dog hookworm transmission. For cats, unknown.
Once a cat is infected with larvae, they enter the small intestine and mature on the wall. Mature hookworms lay many eggs, passed in feces; eggs stay active in the environment long.

Severity depends on the degree and type of infection. Some cats show no symptoms.
Black, tarry stool
Pale gums from anemia
Dull coat
Skin irritation (especially the feet)
Weight loss
Poor growth in kittens
04. Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention
The vet diagnoses hookworm by fecal flotation: mix the cat’s stool with a solution, any eggs float to the surface, then view under a microscope.
Many dewormers kill and prevent hookworm; a vet-recommended broad-spectrum dewormer with good palatability and value is advised.
Daily prevention includes:
Use dewormer regularly, ideally monthly.
Clean the litter box promptly.
Avoid letting the cat outdoors as much as possible.
Deworm the mother cat two weeks before breeding.
