How to Clean Your Dog’s Dirty Ears

Uncleaned ears get smelly and invite mites and infection. The L-shape, long hair, and floppy ears trap moisture and wax. Pluck hair with powder, then flush with a pet ear solution, and deworm for mites.

1 Why Ears Get Dirty

Like us, dogs make ear wax, but cannot clean themselves, so oil, dust, and moisture build up. The ear’s L-shape traps water that will not air-dry, breeding bacteria. Long inner hair and floppy ears worsen ventilation and wax.

2 Pluck the Ear Hair

Dense hair blocks airflow, so pluck it regularly – breeds like the Teddy, Shih Tzu, and Schnauzer about once a month – to stop debris and post-bath infection. Dust the ear with plucking powder first to cut pain and bleeding.

3 Flush with Ear Solution

Use a pet ear cleaner: hold the dog, drop a few drops in, massage the base, press the ear to dissolve wax, then let the dog shake it out and wipe the dirt with tissue or cotton. If it is hard at home, ask the groomer during a bath – and keep water out of the ears.

4 Mind Ear Mites

Deworm regularly to prevent mites. Heavy brown discharge with frequent scratching means mites; treat by the standard three-step mite care.
