Is It Unhealthy to Let Your Dog Sleep in Your Bed?

๐Ÿ“ Summary

Letting a dog sleep next to you can hurt your sleep and health. Dogs hear and smell keenly and wake easily at small lights, sounds, or odors, then pace or bark and disturb you. The bacteria they carry can irritate your airways or skin, constant closeness can make the dog overly dependent and anxious, and there is a real risk of accidentally rolling onto or stepping on it. When possible, keep separate sleeping areas; otherwise vaccinate, deworm, bathe, and clean regularly, and move a sick dog elsewhere.

1 Potential Drawbacks

Many owners are close to their dogs and let them sleep by the bed or even on it. Does this affect the owner’s health? Here is the detail.

1. Poor sleep quality. Dogs are sensitive to sound and smell and nap a lot by day, so at night they are not in deep sleep and start easily at faint light, noise, or scent, then wander or bark. A light sleeper is quickly short of rest and grows tired.

2. Irritated airways and skin. Dogs are not bathed daily and carry more bacteria, which can pass to people by contact or air and bother the respiratory tract and skin. If you develop rhinitis or coughing after sharing a bed, move the dog to another room.

3. Over-dependence. Dogs that always sleep with the owner lean on them; if the owner is away, the dog may grow anxious and bark, lose appetite, or sleep poorly, harming its mental and physical health.

4. Safety. Owners toss and turn in sleep and may press on or kick the dog, or step on it at night; a suddenly startled dog could injure a person.

2 How to Reduce the Risks

To avoid these problems, sleep in separate rooms when you can. If not, take these steps:

1. Keep the dog’s rabies and core vaccines current and deworm it regularly to avoid zoonotic disease.

2. Keep the home clean and disinfected, bathe the dog, trim its nails and coat, and limit the bacteria it carries.

3. If the dog is unwellโ€”especially with skin disease, vomiting, or diarrheaโ€”let it sleep elsewhere temporarily to protect you both.

In general, sharing a bed can cause health issues, so separate sleeping is best unless necessary. If you feel unwell after co-sleeping, see a veterinarian.
