Yellow-spotted Amazon River Turtle

1 Overview

The yellow-spotted Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) is a large South American side-necked turtle and one of the most charismatic of the Podocnemis genus. Hatchlings show bold yellow head spots that fade with age.

It is a protected species across much of its range and is best kept only by committed keepers who can provide serious space.

2 Appearance

The oval, grey-brown carapace is smooth; the head bears the namesake yellow spots and stripes. Females grow larger than males, with some adults exceeding 40 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

These are intelligent and surprisingly social, often doing well in groups, but they need a very large indoor pond or outdoor setup as adults.

They are prone to sudden death from poor water quality or stress, so stable, well-filtered conditions are non-negotiable.

4 Habitat & Environment

Big, deep, warm, well-filtered water with a basking area. They are strong swimmers and appreciate room to roam.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous and enthusiastic: aquatic plants, fruit, vegetables, pellets, and some protein. They are bold feeders – portion control prevents obesity.
