1 Why a Guinea Pig Stops Eating
Guinea pigs get gastroenteritis easily because their guts are delicate. Signs are soft stool, low appetite, dullness, and diarrhea—common in spring-autumn transitions and summer. When Salmonella or E. coli invade and immunity drops with season or diet change, the bacteria boom and cause inflammation.
So feed on a schedule, never give raw water—only clean drinking water. In season changes with big day-night swings, keep them warm; chilling can trigger gastroenteritis.
II. Chilling and Colds
Winter is cold; without warmth a guinea pig catches a cold, loses appetite, and refuses food. In cold weather watch their state and move them to a warmer room or add a warm blanket to the cage. Some get anorexia after illness—eating little or nothing—and need a vet check.
III. Food Problems
Guinea pigs are herbivores; feed mainly dry or fresh hay, not too many fresh fruits and vegetables, since watery food burdens the gut and causes soft stool or diarrhea. Leek, spinach, and cabbage cause diarrhea and bloating, so avoid them. Bad food makes them refuse to eat from discomfort, so watch the diet.
Sudden feed changes or spoiled, moldy feed also cut intake or cause refusal; store feed well for their health.
